About Yorkie

Meet the Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier, affectionately known as the Yorkie, may be one of the smallest dog breeds in the world, but anyone who has ever loved one will tell you that size is the least interesting thing about them. Elegant, affectionate, intelligent, and surprisingly confident, these tiny dogs form incredibly strong bonds with the people they love.

Often recognized for their beautiful silky coats and glamorous appearance, real Yorkies are much more than lap dogs. They are spirited little terriers with a proud history that began in Yorkshire, England.

History & Origin

From Working Terrier to Beloved Companion

The Yorkshire Terrier was developed in Yorkshire and Lancashire, northern England, during the 19th century. Early Yorkies were working terriers, valued for their ability to control rats in textile mills and other working environments.

As the breed became more popular, its elegant appearance, confident personality, and affectionate nature made it a favorite companion dog.

From its working-class origins, the Yorkie went on to become one of the world’s most recognizable toy breeds — a tiny dog with a big personality and a proud terrier heritage.

Coat Varieties

Yorkies come in two officially recognized coat types, each with its own appeal:

Coat and Grooming

Yorkies have a fine, silky coat that can grow long. A short pet trim is a grooming choice, not a separate “smooth coat” variety. A long coat needs frequent brushing to prevent tangles and mats; AKC recommends daily brushing for a Yorkie kept in a long coat. Regular bathing, trimming, nail care, and gentle grooming practice are also part of routine care.

Smooth Coat

Short, glossy, and close-fitting. Easy to maintain — a quick weekly brush is plenty. Smooth coats highlight the breed’s signature apple-shaped head and expressive eyes.

Temperament & Personality

Yorkies are best described as devoted little watchdogs in a tiny package. They are:

Loyal

Often bond intensely with one person, while remaining loving with the whole household.

Alert

Excellent little watchdogs — they will tell you the moment a leaf moves outside.

Confident

They have no idea how small they are. Brave to the point of comedy.

Affectionate

Lap dogs through and through. They love warmth, cuddles, and being near “their” person.

Smart

Quick learners with a slightly stubborn streak — short, positive training sessions work best.

Portable

Their tiny size makes them ideal companions for apartments, travel, and quiet households.

Health Considerations

Like any breed, Yorkies can be affected by health conditions. Potential concerns include patellar luxation and some eye conditions. Dental disease is also common in Yorkies, and very small puppies can be vulnerable to low blood sugar. These are potential risks, not conditions every Yorkie will develop.
Ask for the puppy’s veterinary records and any available health-testing records for its parents. Discuss the puppy’s care with your veterinarian.

Is a Yorkie the Right Fit for You?

A Yorkie may suit many homes, but small size doesn’t mean low maintenance. Consider whether you can provide regular grooming, daily attention and activity, positive training, and gentle handling. Supervise young children and other pets around a small dog.
